The New York Mets (51-67) defeated the Baltimore Orioles (36-85) by a score of 16-5 thanks to a nine-run sixth inning at Camden Yards.

Pitching

Zack Wheeler was the starter and he wasn’t as dominating as he has been recently. He gave up three hits in the first but only one run came across.

In the second, he gave up a double and hit a batter but worked around that to hold the Orioles scoreless.

Wheeler settled in to pitch a 1-2-3 third but faced another jam in the fourth. The first two batters reached but Wheeler induced a double play to get out of the jam. He pitched a scoreless and calmer fifth inning.

His final line was: 5 IP, 5 H, ER, 2 BB, 3 K. He clearly wasn’t as sharp as he has usually been but this was the kind of start that would have gotten away from Zack in the past. So perhaps it’s still a good sign for the Mets.

Jerry Blevins pitched a scoreless sixth inning to boost that trade value. Tim Peterson pitched two innings and gave up four runs. He hasn’t been that impressive aside from an initial hot streak.

Drew Smith pitched a scoreless ninth to end the game.

Offense

Yes.

Okay in all seriousness, the Mets scored two in the first, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and nine in the third.

In the first, Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil singled to begin the game. Nimmo scored on a Wilmer Flores sac-fly and McNeil scored on a Todd Frazier single.

In the fourth, Austin Jackson tripled and scored on a Jose Bautista single. Jose Reyes tripled too and came home on a Brandon Nimmo double.

In the fifth, Todd Frazier homered.

In the sixth, Nimmo tripled home two runs. He came home on a wild pitch. Later, Todd Frazier drove in two runs on an RBI double. The Orioles staff then walked Jackson and Bautista to load the bases for Kevin Plawecki. Plawecki hit a grand slam to make it nine runs in the inning.

In the ninth, Nimmo singled and Wilmer Flores homered to make the score 16-5.

Brandon Nimmo went 5-for-5 while reaching base all six times. He’s good.
