The Mets beat the Yankees by a score of 10-4 in Yankees Stadium and split their doubleheader on Tuesday. Pete Alonso hit his 22nd homer of the season. (Box Score)

Pitching

Fresh off his complete game shutout, Jason Vargas walked into the lion’s den and came out alive.

He gave up a couple of hits to Luke Voit and Gleyber Torres in the first but got Clint Frazier to strikeout to end the threat. He then proceeded to walk Austin Romine in the second with two-outs but once again, slipped out of any trouble.

In the third was when he faced his biggest challenge of the night. He gave up a single to DJ LeMahieu, a walk to Voit, and a hit to Gary Sanchez to load the bases with no outs. Gleyber Torres singled in the first run of the game for the Yankees and it was still bases loaded and no-outs. With the Yankees smelling blood and a chance to get right back in the game, Vargas got Frazier and Gio Urshela to hit into force outs to score two runs but limit the damage substantially.

In the fourth, Vargas gave up one-out singles to Brett Gardner and LeMahieu but once again squeezed out of it. In the fifth, he pitched his first 1-2-3 inning of the night which included a strikeout of Torres. He followed that up with another 1-2-3 inning in the sixth to end his night.

His final line for the night was: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. I will continue to enjoy the Jason Vargas being good experience but it seems to good to be true.

Jeurys Familia pitched a scoreless seventh with a couple of strikeouts. He has looked much better his last three outings. The Mets need something from him to take the load off the other guys like Gsellman and Lugo.

Speaking of Lugo, Seth Lugo had the eighth inning and struck out all three guys he has faced. He has quietly emerged as one of baseball’s best relievers.

Drew Gagnon pitched the ninth to round out the game. He gave up a homer to Garnder but ended the game nonetheless.

Offense

The Mets had lots of it tonight.

Jeff McNeil doubled to lead off the game and J.D. Davis singled to follow him up. Pete Alonso promptly hit a three-run homer to give the Mets and early 3-0 lead against James Paxton.

The put up another three spot in the third inning. Alonso and Todd Frazier walked against Paxton so Michael Conforto singled home Alonso. Wilson Ramos then singled home Frazier to make it 5-0. With two-outs, Adeiny Hechavarria singled home Conforto to make it 6-0 and the Mets chased Paxton early.

Jeff McNeil reached on an error to begin the third inning and then J.D Davis hit a two-run homer to give the Mets some of the runs they gave back the previous half-inning.

In the fifth inning, Carlos Gomez hit a solo homer to make it 9-3. He’s not been great but he’s been better than Juan Lagares.

The Mets scored again in the ninth inning. Todd Frazier was hit by a pitch and left for Luis Guillorme, who was presumably giving Todd the rest of the night off. Amed Rosario eventually doubled home Guillorme to make it 10-3.

McNeil, Conforto, Davis, Frazier, Alonso and Gomez all reached base twice in the win.

On Deck

The Mets will be off tomorrow and then welcome the Cardinals starting on Thursday. Jacob deGrom toes the rubber then.
