The New York Mets (2-0) defeated the St. Louis Cardinals (0-2) this afternoon by a score of 6-2 at Citi Field. The Mets record improves to 2-0 on the season, which is the first time they have done so since 2013.

Pitching:

Jacob deGrom had a solid first outing today while throwing 101 pitches in his first start. He tossed 5.2 innings, gave up four hits, struck out seven, walked one, and only gave up one earned run on an RBI single by Jose Martinez.

Robert Gsellman replaced deGrom with two outs in the top of the sixth and struck out Jose Martinez to get the last out of the inning. Gsellman continued to pitch into the seventh inning, but was pulled after giving up back to back base hits to Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong.

Anthony Swarzak took over for Gsellman with runners on second and third with only one out. Swarzak struck out pinch-hitter Greg Garcia on a 3-2 fastball. Swarzak then got Dexter Fowler to fly out to center fielder Juan Lagares for the final out of the seventh inning.

In the eighth, Swarzak gave up a solo home run to Matt Carpenter to cut the Mets lead to 5-2. Swarzak then got pulled out after giving up a walk on a 3-2 pitch to Jose Martinez that appeared to result in an oblique issue. Hopefully, it’s not too serious but manager Mickey Callaway, of course, wanted to play it safe.

Jeurys Familia came in to finish the eighth and got a king-sized out by striking out Yadier Molina. Familia also pitched the ninth inning and closed the door with a four-out save for his first of the season.

In their first two games, the Mets pitching staff has struck out 27 batters.

Hitting:

Travis d’Arnaud started his first game this season and also hit the Mets first home run of the season to make it 3-1 Mets in the 4th inning.

Yoenis Cespedes hit his first home run today in the fifth inning off of Michael Wacha to give the Mets a 4-1 lead.

Amed Rosario batted 9th in the order, went 0-3 while walking once.

Todd Frazier was a big factor in today’s win. Todd went 1 for 3 while driving in three of the six runs of the game.

Juan Lagares had his first start of the season in CF, batting seventh in the order. He went 2-4 with two singles.

Asdrubal Cabrera was the lead-off hitter in the lineup today and went 3-5 at the plate. Cabrera drove in an insurance run on an RBI double in the eighth inning to make it 6-2, as the St. Louis Cardinals unwisely decided to bring in a left-hander, Tyler Lyons, to force Cabera to switch to the right side of the plate.

On Deck:

The New York Mets will send Steven Matz to the mound for his first start of the season tomorrow to finish up this series with the St. Louis Cardinals, who will counter with Luke Weaver.

The game starts at 1:10 p.m. and will be televised on SNY and ESPN. It can also be heard on 710 WOR and ESPN Deportes 1050.
