How the tables turn!

The Mets (17-9) routed the San Diego Padres (10-19) to cap off their long road trip with a 14-2 win and a series victory.

Pitching

Zack Wheeler started this one for the Mets. He had a very slow first inning, one in which he threw 30 pitches. On the bright side, he gave up no runs in the inning. He had a similar situation in the third inning but this time, he gave up a two-out, two-run single to Freddy Galvis.

Wheeler to his credit settled in after that and pitched alright given his first inning. He had his strikeout pitch working, something we have not seen much of this year.

His final line read: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K. It was not a great start, but the Mets will take it given how much everyone outside of Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom have struggled this year.

Paul Sewald got the sixth inning for the Mets. He retired the side in order but found trouble in the seventh inning. He gave up a leadoff single followed by a ground-rule double. In a second and third, no-out jam, Sewald struck out Eric Hosmer, Christian Villanueva, and Franchy Cordero. A great job by Sewald to work his way out of it.

Robert Gsellman got the eighth inning and got out of the inning despite giving up a couple of hits (although having Amed Rosario at short might have prevented one).

Matt Harvey working with a 12-run lead, got the ninth inning and helped put the Padres to rest as the Mets closed out the series win.

Offense

Yoenis Cespedes recorded a two-out double in the first and came home on a RBI single by Jay Bruce. In the second, Jose Reyes walked, stole second, and came home on Tomas Nido‘s RBI single.

In the third, Cespedes singled and Bruce walked. The duo pulled off a double steal and both of them scored on a two-out, two-run double by Adrian Gonzalez.

In the seventh, the Mets got some much needed insurance. Brandon Nimmo and Todd Frazier reached base to begin the seventh (sandwiched by a Bruce out) for Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez must feel at home in San Diego because he homered to give the Mets a 7-2 lead.

Reyes and Nido reached base following Gonzalez’s homer and both scored on Asdrubal Cabrera‘s two-run single.

In the eighth inning, Bruce led off the inning with a single and Frazier followed with a home run. Frazier continues to be one of the most productive members of the team along with Cabrera. Reyes homered a few batters later to make the score further lopsided.

The Mets did not take the foot off the pedal there. Michael Conforto and Nimmo both recorded RBI singles later in the inning. Every one in the starting lineup as well as Nimmo, reached base twice in this one.

Fourteen runs is the highest offensive output the Mets have had this season.

Cespedes left the game in the third inning after his steal of third base. The Mets called it a “sore left thumb.”

On deck

The Mets will return to action on Tuesday after a day off tomorrow. Steven Matz will face the Braves at Citi Field.
