Game Summary
The Mets (9-10) two hit the Florida Marlins (11-8) and beat them 7-1. John Maine started and was spectacular, but it was Omir Santos who got the crowd going with a first inning grand slam that put the Mets in front for good.
Mets Pitching
John Maine had his best start of the season tonight and looked very sharp at times. In six innings pitched he allowed just one hit and three walks while striking out four batters. The only run he allowed was an unearned run in the first inning. If this start was a sign of things to come for Maine, it would sure alleviate some of the anxiety surrounding the rest of the rotation. He lowered his ERA to 5.40, shaving off a full two runs. Nice job Johnny!
Sean Green pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief of Maine. J.J. Putz followed and got into a little trouble in the eighth, but came out of it without any damage.
K-Rod closed it out in a non-save situation, but looked a little agitated on the mound after walking leadoff batter Jeremy Hermida.
Mets Hitting
The Mets jumped right out to a 6-1 lead in the first inning with the biggest blast coming off the bat of catcher Omir Santos who hit his first career homerun, a grand slam over the centerfield wall.
David Wright had a solid day at the plate with two hits including a triple in the 8th inning that was nearly a homerun.
Random Thoughts
It was good to see Gary Sheffield redeem himself after that dropped flyball in the first inning that led to a run. He came right back in the bottom of the first and drove in the Mets first run to tie the game at one.
Carlos Delgado didn’t start due to a sore hip. Luis Castillo came out of the game with minor back spasms.
Hanley Ramirez was hit on the hand in the first inning by a John Maine fastball and left the game.
Game Ball
Omir Santos made us all smile tonight and gave John Maine the cushion he needed.
