The New York Mets (47-55) beat the San Diego Padres (48-54) on Thursday afternoon by a final of 4-0, taking two out of the three games in this weekday series.
Pitching
Jacob deGrom pitched seven scoreless innings, and finally got the run support that he deserves, getting him the win. DeGrom stuck out nine, giving up four hits on 105 pitches (56 of which were sliders). His season ERA is 2.86, which ranks fifth in the National League, and is the lowest it has been since April 3.
Reliever Seth Lugo threw a very successful eighth inning striking out three on a mere twelve pitches. Lugo has had a stellar month, throwing 9.2 scoreless innings, striking out 13 and giving up three hits.
Edwin Diaz was brought into a non-save situation to secure the ballgame for New York. However, he wasn’t in the game long, getting hit in the left foot by a 100 mph line drive off the bat of Manny Machado.
Luis Avilan entered the game and closed out the bottom of the ninth, finishing the job for Diaz. Avilan struck out two and gave up one hit.

Offense
The Mets offense got going early, as J.D. Davis walked and Pete Alonso singled putting runners at first and third. Then, Wilson Ramos hit a sacrifice fly, bringing Davis home to give the Mets a 1-0 first inning lead.
Robinson Cano proceeded to hit a single and Todd Frazier doubled on a ball misplaced by Hunter Renfroe to bring in Alonso and Cano. Michael Conforto beat the shift on an RBI single making for a 4-0 bottom of the first.
Frazier was on base four times in the game with two hits, two RBI, and two walks. Davis, Conforto, and Juan Lagares each had two hits as well.
On Deck
