The New York Mets (45-53) defeated the San Francisco Giants (49-50) by a final of 11-4 this afternoon in the third game of a four-game series at Oracle Park.
Offense
The Mets struck first off Jeff Samardzija in the second inning, when first baseman Dominic Smith walloped a first-pitch fastball over the brick wall in right-center field. The solo bomb made for Smith’s 10th of the year – a new career-high. He would add another run to his cause with a base knock up the middle in the fourth following a leadoff triple by Todd Frazier.
New York tacked on two more to open up the fifth. Amed Rosario led off with a base hit through the left side and stole second, and one out later, Jeff McNeil launched a home run off the right-field foul pole.
Frazier added a solo blast of his own in the top of the sixth off Derek Holland to make it a 5-1. game. J.D. Davis and Rosario stroked singles of their own before Pete Alonso put the game out of reach with a pinch-hit three-run homer to right-center that traveled 444 feet.
Smith drove home two more against lefty Ty Blach in the top of the ninth, smacking a bases-loaded hit to left to raise his RBI total to 22. Davis roped a single to left to score an eleventh run shortly thereafter.
Davis, Smith, and Rosario alone accounted for nine the club’s 17 hits on the afternoon, tying a season-high they set earlier in the week in their 14-run barrage against the Minnesota Twins. Every starting position player reached base at least once today.
Pitching
Walker Lockett was solid through five innings en route to his first big-league win. The 25-year-old allowed just one run on five hits and no walks while striking out three in what was easily his best start in a Mets uniform.
The Giants’ lone run off Lockett came across in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a two-out RBI single from Joe Panik that scored Donovan Solano. Solano reached on a fielder’s choice comebacker that Lockett nearly misfired to second. He threw 43 of his 58 total pitches for strikes, retiring nine in a row from the end of the first through the middle of the fourth.
Lefty Justin Wilson tossed a scoreless sixth, notching a double-play to navigate a leadoff hit from Pablo Sandoval. Opposing batters are now 3-for-19 against Wilson since he first came off the disabled list.
Tyler Bashlor dazzled in his first outing back from Triple-A Syracuse, retiring all six of the batters he faced – two via strikeout – to keep the Mets’ lead nice and cozy.
Stephen Nogosek returned on a less inspiring note, surrendering a two-run blast off the bat of Alex Dickerson. Mike Yastrzemski sent a fastball toward McCovey Cove not too long afterward, though Nogosek managed to finish the ballgame with a 30-pitch inning. Coming into today, he had not allowed a homer in professional baseball since August 20 of last year.
On Deck
The Mets will look to secure a series split in San Francisco on Sunday. Steven Matz will look to improve off his last start against rookie southpaw Conner Menez. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM EST and the game will air on SNY.
