The story of the game can be summarized in two words: Jacob deGrom. The Mets starter was absolutely masterful, striking out 14 in seven innings of work. The 14 K’s were a career high for deGrom. He has started the 2019 season with 13 consecutive scoreless innings and going back to last year, has 26 straight. During this streak, he has allowed 40 strikeouts and has only yielded two walks.

DeGrom tied Bob Gibson with his 26th consecutive quality start, a major league record. He added to his own record by pitching his 31st straight start in which he has allowed three runs or less. DeGrom is the first Met pitcher to begin a season with two games with at least 10 strikeouts or more. To make the evening even more special, deGrom slammed the second home run of his career. He has been masterful.

Pitching

Jacob deGrom started for the Mets and proceeded to strike out five of the first nine Marlins he faced. Through five innings, deGrom struck out nine while only allowing only two singles, to Brian Anderson and Lewis Brinson.

Through six innings, the reigning Cy Young Award winner had 11 strikeouts. It was the 34th time in deGrom’s career that he has struck ten or more in a game.

DeGrom struck out the side to end his evening giving him a career high of 14.

DeGrom’s final line was seven innings pitched, zero runs, three hits, 14 strikeouts throwing 114 pitches.

Luis Avilan and Robert Gsellman made it interesting in the ninth by giving up four runs, three of which charged to Avilan.

That caused Mickey Callaway to go to closer Edwin Diaz and he got the final out to end the game.

Offense

The Mets were retired in order in the first, but in the second they took the lead on a two-out rally. Keon Braxton singled to the opposite field and Amed Rosario followed with a long triple to right center to plate Braxton and give the Mets a 1-0 lead.
