Prior to Sunday’s game, Francisco Alvarez addressed the media and confirmed he is set to undergo surgery for a torn ligament in his thumb. That surgery is scheduled for Thursday.

He also gave himself a six-to-eight week which lines up for an early-to-mid June return date.

Francisco Alvarez has a torn ligament in his left thumb and will require surgery, according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza.

The Mets announced earlier today that Alvarez was placed on the 15-day IL with a sprain in his left thumb. This news is more significant, meaning Alvarez will expectably miss much more than 15 days.

“He will require surgery,” Mendoza told the media. “This is something that hopefully we get done at the beginning of next week. We don’t know the timetable of his recovery but we’re pretty confident that we’ll get him back this week.”

While Mendoza stated there was no timetable for Alvarez’s return, Starling Marte told the media the players were informed his recovery would take six to eight weeks. This would confirm Mendoza’s confidence of Alvarez’s return in 2024.

This is a massive loss for the Mets, as Alvarez clubbed 25 homers in 123 games as a rookie in 2023. Nido, who was recalled from Syracuse today, currently holds Alvarez’s spot on the roster.

Francisco Alvarez is heading to the 15-day injured list with a left thumb sprain.

The Mets catcher sustained the injury on Friday night against the Dodgers while attempting to hold himself up after falling down running the base paths. His thumb went straight into the ground, causing Alvarez to wince in pain while running toward second.

The Mets pulled Alvarez from the game the next half inning and announced it was a left thumb injury. After the game, Carlos Mendoza said “he was pretty concerned.”

Alvarez also injured the same left thumb on April 17 against the Pirates while sliding into second base. The trainers checked the thumb and allowed him to stay in the game.

Tomás Nido has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse in place of Alvarez. Nido was slashing .345/.345/.517 with a homer in Syracuse before being recalled, and will join Omar Narváez in the majors.

The Mets also announced they have designated lefty Kolton Ingram for assignment. The 27-year-old had a 7.20 ERA in five innings down in Syracuse.
