The New York Mets (15-6) threw a combined no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies (10-11) on Friday night at Citi Field, winning by a score of 3-0. Five Mets pitchers came together to keep the Phillies out of the hit column, and the Mets now have their second no-hitter in franchise history.

Tylor Megill came out guns blazing, firing a flurry of fastballs throughout his five innings of work. Megill had five strikeouts, but he also issued three walks after only walking three batters in his first 23 innings pitched this season.

Megill’s final line: 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K, 1.93 ERA

Drew Smith came on in relief in the sixth inning and struck out four batters across 1 1/3 innings of work. Joely Rodriguez walked the first batter he faced after coming on in the seventh, but he induced a double play ball from Alec Bohm to keep the Phillies out of the hit column.

Seth Lugo was brought in to pitch in the eighth inning after Rodriguez walked his second batter, the sixth walk drawn by the Phillies to that point. Lugo retired both batters he faced, one of whom was Jean Segura, who was 7-for-14 in his career against Lugo prior to his at-bat tonight.

Edwin Diaz took the mound in the ninth inning with a chance at a save but also a chance to achieve so much more. He struck out Bryce Harper. He struck out Nick Castellanos. He struck out J.T. Realmuto. History.

Not to be lost in the chaos, the Mets’ pitching staff has now recorded at least seven strikeouts in 17 consecutive games, tying a franchise record set by the 2014 Mets from July 6-26.

It took the Mets until the fifth inning to get to Aaron Nola, who retired 10 Mets in a row at one point. Mark Canha doubled on a liner right over the third base bag, his first extra-base hit after recording 16 straight singles to start the season. Jeff McNeil followed that up with a two-run single to left center, breaking the scoreless deadlock.

Pete Alonso went yard in the sixth inning to give the Mets a 3-0 lead, his fourth home run of the season and his first in his last 40 at-bats. Prior to this homer, Alonso’s last 11 hits had all been singles.

Eight of the nine batters in the Mets’ lineup got a hit. Francisco Lindor had a two-hit day and will look to start another hot streak after slumping towards the end of this most recent road trip.
