fernando salas

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said on Saturday that reliever Fernando Salas has cleared up his visa issues and is expected in camp on Sunday.

The Mets are concerned with the lack of workload for Salas after he pitched in only two games for Mexico in the WBC and has yet to pitch in a Grapefruit League game.

Original Report – March 17

The New York Mets re-signed right-hander Fernando Salas this offseason to be a key cog in their bullpen for the 2017.

Problem is the veteran reliever has yet to pitch in a Grapefruit League game this spring because of ongoing visa issues. Salas is not currently with the team as he continues to try and work out the issue.

The Mets were hopeful that the issue would be resolved once Salas returned from the WBC. Salas did get into two games for Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.

Salas, 31, had a 2.08 ERA and 0.64 WHIP with the Mets after coming over in an August trade with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In 17.1 innings with the Mets he struck out 19 and walked nobody.

The Mets are also still waiting on a decision from Major League Baseball about the length of a suspension for Jeurys Familia.
