After coming back from a 7-3 deficit in the 8th inning, the Mets bullpen, specifically Pedro Feliciano gave up the winning run and the Mets lost in dramatic fashion in 13 innings, 8-7.

Game Notes

Johan Santana started the game today like nothing that has been seen recently from him – hittable and giving up runs. Johan gave up six runs on eight hits, including a two run home run to Matt Holliday. Johan found his way around the bend after that inning, and his final line was five and two-third innings, giving up seven runs on 13 hits walking one and striking out two. If he had not gotten himself in trouble in the sixth inning, he may have made it out and possibly into the seventh.

The bullpen was terrific today, and to just keep it simple: Everyone not name Oliver Perez went out and pitched. Pedro Feliciano was the only one victimized, giving up one run on one hit with two walks and hit one batter with a pitch in his one and two-third inning appearance.

The Mets offense was scattered today, with Mike Hessman who was filling in for Ike Davis getting his first hit as a Met, an RBI double in the first inning. Carlos Beltran hit his first home run since returning from the DL and it may be a sign of things to come for Beltran. The true offensive explosion and where the comeback was setup was in the eighth inning when Angel Pagan deposited a ball deep into the right field bleachers to bring the game to 7-5. Ike Davis made a pinch-hitting appearance and knocked in David Wright and Mike Hessman with a single to shallow center. For the last 5 innings however, the Mets couldn’t scratch across a run.

Jeff Francoeur went 0-5 with a BB. Henry Blanco and Josh Thole went 0-2 and 0-3 with a BB respectively.

David Wright went 3-6 with a run scored.

Luis Castillo went 1-6 and it seems like his slap-hitting isn’t getting the job done. Luis grounded out with the bases loaded in the 8th inning.

Turning Point

When Johan Santana gave up the six runs in the first inning it essentially opened the flood gates for the Mets to play from behind.

Game Ball

The Mets bullpen minus Pedro Feliciano. They managed to hold the Cardinals offense without a run to attempt to give the Mets a chance to win.

On Deck

The Mets will look for R.A. Dickey to rebound after being removed due to injury risk against the Cardinals and Blake Hawksworth.
