jacob degrom The New York Mets (53-48) were defeated by the Colorado Rockies (50-52) by a score of 2-1 at Citi Field Thursday afternoon.  With the loss, the Mets temporarily move to 6 games back for the division lead.   The Washington Nationals will take on the San Francisco Giants tonight at AT&T Park.

Pitching:

Jacob deGrom followed one of the best starts of his career with one of his worst his last time out. DeGrom pitched seven shutout innings while walking one and striking out six.

There really isn’t much to say except that deGrom was incredible today. He gave the Mets exactly what they needed after a gut wrenching loss last night.Jacob even made a few incredible plays in the field today showing that a gold glove might indeed be in his future someday.

Addison Reed and Jerry Blevins combined to pitch a scoreless eighth inning for the Mets today.

After Jeurys Familia’s first blown save in nearly a year, he was right back out on the hill today after originally being deemed unavailable.  Familia was awful once again. Familia gave up two hits, walked two, and gave up two runs and the lead before finally being pulled. Hansel Robles was able to come in and limit the damage and finally end the inning but it was too little too late.

Offense:

In the top of the second inning, with two outs, James Loney got things started with a single to center fielder Charlie Blackmon.  Rene Rivera followed with a double to right field which scored Loney and put the Mets up 1-0.

In the bottom of the seventh with the score still 1-0, Rene Rivera got the Mets started with a lead-off single, his third hit of the day. Alejandro De Aza followed with a double to put runners on second and third with nobody out.  Terry Collins decided to pinch hit Yoenis Cespedes and he was promptly walked to load the bases with nobody out. Kelly Johnson, Curtis Granderson, and Wilmer Flores all failed to bring in a run as the Mets hitting with runners in scoring position woes continue.

There are no words to describe how bad the Mets have been with hitting with runners in scoring position this year.

jeurys familiaNotes:

The Mets are “confident” they will add a relief pitcher according to Mike Puma but they are looking at potential lineup additions first.

Yoenis Cespedes was out of the lineup today as his quad injury flared up yesterday but was able to pinch hit late.

Neil Walker had a second straight three hit day.

Mets top prospect Amed Rosario was placed on the DL by the Binghamton Mets.

JZ Goat of the game: Jeurys Familia. Runner up is Terry Collins. Wow. Just wow.

On Deck:

The Mets will play the second game of their four-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field tomorrow evening. The game has a start time of 7:10 PM.  Steven Matz (8-6, 3.36 ERA) looks to get the Mets back on track against Tyler Chatwood (9-6, 3.65 ERA). Matz is coming off one of his better starts in which he picked up his first win since May 25th.
