After a shaky outing from Dillon Gee, the Mets offense sparked a late rally to take the first game of the series, 6-4 against the Astros.

Game Notes

DIllon Gee was struggling today to consistently throw strikes, and continually got himself into and then out of jams. Gee allowed four runs in five innings on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Gee was walking a tight rope the whole game, and most of his walks came back to bite him. It was bound to happen at some point, where Gee would have to struggle through an outing.

Ryota Igarashi came out to relieve Dillon Gee, and allowed an RBI single and then an error by Daniel Murphy allowed a run to score, making the game 4-0. Pat Misch came out to finish up the sixth, and got an unconventional double play after a poor base running decision by Bill Hall allowed a double play. Ryota Igarashi’s final line, one-third of an inning, one hit. Pat Misch went one and two-third innings, generating plenty of weak contact. Taylor Buchholz went two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and giving up one hit. K-Rod came out for the four-out save, putting some runners on base as usual, giving up two hits and striking out one.

The bullpen has continued to be amazing, and on a day when Gee wasn’t on his A game, the pen came out and had an amazing day.

The offense today was held in check by Bud Norris, until the seventh inning moonshot of a home run by Jason Bay put the Mets on the board. After a Justin Turner single in the eighth, everyone’s favorite prospect Fernando Martinez annihilated a pitch to right field for his first home run of the year. Then, after a Jose Reyes walk and a Josh Thole flyout, David Wright tattooed a ball into the left field bleachers to put the Mets on top, 5-4. A Jason Pridie double that scored Justin Turner in the ninth was done for good measure. After the Mets were stifled for seven innings, it was great to see them not give up and strike against Bud Norris.

Justin Turner – 2 for 4 with 2 runs and a strikeout.

Josh Thole – 0 for 3 with a walk.

Turning Point

Jason Bay’s awakening home run/ the eighth inning.
