Mets avoid a sweep against the Phillies and end a five game losing streak as the Mets take a 7-4 win thanks to the man nobody remembers, Nick Evans.
Game Notes
Mike Pelfrey was laboring today, requiring a career-high 125 pitches to get through six innings, but notched his first win since July 27. He got knocked for three runs on nine hits, two walks, and two Ks. Not terrible, but Mike Pelfrey has become a joke to me. You shouldn’t need that many pitches for six innings. But you gotta give it to him that he can throw that many and Terry Collins to leave him in when managers baby their starters with pitch counts. Pelfrey is now 7-10 on the season with a 4.10 ERA.
Byrdak and Acosta combine for two innings pitched with Tim giving up an unearned run.
Bobby Parnell finally got his first save of the season with an inning pitched, two walks, and two strikeouts. Definitely not a calm inning, but he finally didn’t blow it.
Nick Evans and David Wright, two of my favorites, lead the Mets offense today with six hits combined, and hit six of the Mets RBIs. Duda being the other.
Nick Evans matched a career high with three hits, including a three-run homer, and finished with four RBIs before being double-switched out of the game. With Duda in right and Ike and Murphy out, Evans will probably be the remaining first baseman. I have no problem with that.
Wright had three hits, one being a solo homerun.
Bay, Turner, and Thole all had 0-fers. But Thole did have some words to spare with Placido Polanco today. The Mets players must hate them as much as the fans.
Gary Matthews Sr., a Phillies broadcaster, proceeded to set Twitter afire by saying on air: “The Mets are crybabies. That’s why they lose.” This rivalry is just brutal.
