According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Colorado Rockies were one of many teams that put a waiver claim on Mets’ third baseman David Wright.
It’s unclear who was awarded the claim, but the Mets have made it known that they aren’t trading Wright.
Teams do this all the time, and while the Mets have said they are not trading him now, that doesn’t mean he won’t be traded in the offseason.
Obviously, the front office was trying to gauge what type of interest there was in Wright or he would have never been placed on waivers in the first place.
Renck believes that if the Mets do re-sign Jose Reyes this offseason, that there’s a good chance that Wright gets dealt.
Talking to multiple executives, there remains a chance that Wright might become available if the team re-signs shortstop Jose Reyes at top dollar. For now, Wright isn’t going anywhere. But the Rockies search for a third baseman will continue, and they will be first in line if Wright hits the trade market.
Wright is owed $15 million next season and the Mets hold an option for $16 million for 2013. The contract does not have a no-trade clause, but if Wright is traded, he can void his 2013 option and become a free agent after next season.
