Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal says that Eric Young could emerge as the Mets’ secret weapon in the playoffs. Even though Young has underwhelming numbers at the plate throughout his career, he adds another element to the team with his excellent speed and base running ability.

“There’s no question he brings a different dimension to our team,” manager Terry Collins said. “His ability to steal bases, his ability to score, is as good as anybody in the league. This guy was a huge part of our offense for two years. It’s nice to have him back. It’s nice to have him sitting over there, and in certain situations, get him and have him produce a run for us.”

The Mets just recently reacquired Young from the Braves where he was having one of his worst seasons of his career. He was batting .169 in 35 games before being demoted to Triple-A.

While Diamond understands that he will probably won’t contribute with his hitting skills, he says Young could excel in a pinch running role like Terrance Gore did for the Royals last year. Gore stole three bases and was used frequently as a pinch runner during Kansas City’s improbable World Series run.

“I’m excited for whatever role they present to me,” Young said. “Right now, it’s all about the postseason. Getting there, and getting deep in it.”

The problem the Mets had with Young during his first stint was that Collins gave him way too many at-bats and he wound up getting exposed over time. If he’s used exclusively as a pinch runner this time around, there’s no question that he can be a valuable asset to the team.

Last night, Young came in as a pinch runner and was tagged out while caught stealing when he came off the bag.

What do you say Mets fans, should the Mets just give Eric Young one of their postseason roster spots? Is that the way to go?
