
Dominic Smith had a dreadful start to his season hitting .220/.256/.244 with one extra base hit and nine strikeouts in the month of April while also missing time with a leg injury. Smith started to swing the bat much better in the month of May hitting .276/.321/.429 with 13 doubles, 23 RBI, and his first homerun of the year.
When the calendar switched to June Dominics’ bat caught fire and never stopped leading the Florida State League with 38 hits and total bases at 51 in 26 June games. He was also second in the league with his 20 RBI and fifth with 15 runs scored.
Smith was taken in the first round in 2013 out of Sierra High School in Los Angeles and hit .271/.344/.338 with 51/77 BB/SO in 126 games for Savannah last year.
Smith decided to celebrate tonight by hitting his 3rd homerun of the season tonight, a two-run opposite field shot in the first inning. He also hit his league leading 26th double and was intentionally walked in the bottom of the 9th inning with the winning run on second base. Smith is now tied for the league lead with 51 RBI and his .299 average puts in 5th currently in the league while his .423 slugging is good enough for 8th in the league.
Dominic Smith is still only 20-years old and has not faced a pitcher younger than him over the last two years that spans 745 at bats.
