Think I could have crammed anymore chicken references into that title? Bottom line was this game was full of disappointments despite an amazin’ comeback by the Mets that was overshadowed by a night to be forgotten by R.A. Dickey, Miguel Batista and the entire ballclub.

R.A. Dickey took the hill as one of the most talked-about stories in all of sports the past few days. LeBron James and R.A. Dickey hogged most of the airtime of Sportcenter following the knuckleballer’s back-to-back one-hitters, deemed the Johnny Vander-Near by some. Today however, was a different story.

After a 1-2-3 first and squeezing out of a bases loaded jam, Dickey and his 44 2/3 earned run-less streak came to a screeching halt as the Yankees put up a four spot in the third capped off by a three run bomb by Nick Swisher, who made sure to get more than his fair share of celebrations on the field and in the dugout. Dickey ended the evening with six innings pitched, allowing five runs (all earned) on five hits while walking three and punching out three, happily taking a no-decision.

The Mets would tack on a run on a sac fly by Ruben Tejada, and the Yankees re-padded their lead on a Mark Texieira RBI groundout to make it a 5-1 ballgame. Come bottom five, with Dickey on second and Tejada on first, David Wright hit an RBI single to score Dickey, who roughly slid into home through the catcher Chris Stewart to cut the Yankee lead to three. THe next frame however, momentum appeared to be shifting in the the direction of Flushing’s Finest.

The Mets loaded up the bases off of C.C. Sabathia and managed two straight singles to score all three of those baserunners to tie the game. Cory Wade got Kirk Nieuwenhuis swinging to end the inning but not before the Amazin’s showed some fight in them by bringing it back to an even ballgame at five a piece. Maybe they have a chance in this one right?

Wrong. Enter Miguel Batista, who after pitching a 1-2-3 seventh, promptly surrenders a bomb to last night’s hero (or villain, depending on your perspective) Robinson Cano to return the lead to the New York Yankees by a score of 6-5.

From then on the Mets rallied, but could not on a first and third with two out opportunity in the eighth, or with a man on first with two down in the ninth, falling to the cross-town rivals 6-5.

Notes:

-In his first night back, Ruben Tejada cashed in a nice day, going 2-3 on the night with a pair of RBIs.

-Maybe the damp condition that were looming with the humidity contributed to Dickey’s poor performance. Either that or he just didn’t have it today, or both. Either way his ERA climbed to 2.31, allowing for the likes of Strasburg and Cain to re-enter the ASG starter talk.

-Lucas Duda, Ronny Cedeno, David Wright and Andres Torres also had two-hit games, acting as key factors in the rallies during the evening that ended up in vain.

-Nick Swisher is very obnoxious. Yes you hit a home run in the third inning, but it doesn’t give you the right to act like you just hit a World Series Game 7 walkoff. Man he irritated me this series.

-The Mets had four more 2-out RBIs tonight, giving them 159 on the year, a figure leading all of baseball by a wide margin. Who says clutch doesn’t exist?
