Jacob deGrom may not have earned the win in the Mets’ 3-2 walk-off victory over the Padres on Saturday night, but it was his performance that stood out as a key factor in stopping the team’s four game losing streak.
The team’s undisputed ace tossed 7.0 innings and allowed one run in a no-decision, striking out nine and walking just one on a hot muggy night at Citi Field. DeGrom has allowed one run or fewer in each of his last four starts for a 0.65 ERA.
It was the 11th time this season that deGrom has allowed one run or less, and overall in his career he’s done it 35 times out of his 73 starts. That’s the second-most in franchise history and for any major leaguer since 1913 through 73 starts, trailing only Dwight Gooden, who did it 38 times in his first 73 career starts.
DeGrom, 28, is one of the best pitchers in the game at home and after another stellar performance, he now has a 1.88 ERA in 37 starts at Citi Field.
The Mets have given their dominant right-hander very little to work with this season in the way of run support, and in his nine no-decisions this year, deGrom has a 1.92 ERA. Last night’s start was the sixth time this season that deGrom has allowed one run or fewer and did not earn a win.
“I try not to look at what is going on before my starts,” deGrom said after the game. “I just try to go out there and put us in a position to win. I’m going to try and put up zeros every time I’m out there.”
For the season, deGrom is 7-5 with a 1.051 WHIP and a 2.30 ERA which ranks fourth in the major leagues.
