On Monday, New York Mets assistant general manager John Ricco spoke to SNY regarding David Wright‘s ongoing battle to return to the team.
Wright has been sidelined since May 2016 while recovering from multiple surgeries (back, neck, shoulder) after being diagnosed with spinal stenosis in 2015.
When asked about the 35-year-old’s progress and his chances of returning this season, Ricco said, “it remains a day-to-day situation, with the team seeing on nearly an everyday basis how Wright’s body responds”.
He also added that “it remains to be seen” whether Wright will be ready to return once his 20-day rehab assignment ends on August 31.
David Lennon of Newsday remarked on the situation, saying “despite his incremental progress, signs point to him not getting a major-league at-bat this year”.
Wright collected the first two base hits of his rehab stint with the Advanced-A St. Lucie Mets on Sunday. He’s gone 2-for-17 with two walks since making his return to the diamond.
