The New York Mets (54-70) fell to the San Francisco Giants (62-64) in 13 innings to the score of 2-1 at Citi Field. The Mets defense committed three errors tonight including a critical one in the 13th inning. The Mets pitching was sharp and was able to escape several jams tonight but the offense was unable to score any runs past the first inning.

Pitching

Zack Wheeler started off the game with a strikeout to Andrew McCutchen. Wheeler retired Joe Panik on a ground out to first and gave up a single to Buster Posey. Brandon Crawford struck out on a foul tip to end the inning. Wheeler cruised through the next three innings making quick work of the Giants. Wheeler ran into some trouble in the fifth inning while trying to protect the 1-0 lead.

Brandon Belt singled and Evan Longoria doubled to put two Giants in scoring position with no out. Wheeler struck out the next three batters to escape the jam while preserving the one-run lead.

Wheeler found himself in a similar situation in the seventh with the first two Giants reaching base. Wheeler retired Longoria on a line out to right for the first out and struck out Steven Duggar on a 98 MPH fastball for the second. Alen Hanson hit a hanging fly ball that blooped in for a double allowing Crawford to score which tied the game 1-1. Wheeler retired pinch-hitter Hunter Pence on a ground out to end the inning.

Wheeler turned in another brilliant start as he ended his night with a 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 SO. He tossed 113 pitches with 81 of them for strikes.

Robert Gsellman pitched a clean eighth and ninth inning using only 21 pitches to get through the Giants.

Jerry Blevins came in to pitch the tenth inning and gave up a single that was overturned and ruled an out after the play was reviewed. Blevins retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Paul Sewald relieved Blevins in the eleventh and gave up a lead off single to Cutch. Sewald retired Panik on a foul out after falling behind the count 3-0. Posey made the second out of the inning with a fly out to center. With the lefty Sewald was pulled for Daniel Zamora who was making his Citi Field debut. Crawford hit a broken-bat single up the middle advancing Cutch to third. After running the count full, Zamora got Belt to whiff on a breaking ball to end the inning.  

Tyler Bashlor made quick work of the Giants as he set them down using only five pitches in the twelfth inning.

Bashlor gave up a single to Travis’ older brother Chase d’Arnaud in the thirteenth. Bashlor made a pick off attempt that went past Flores’ glove advancing d’Arnaud to second. Bashlor was charged with the error. Bashlor threw a wild pitch advancing the runner to third and the next pitch brushed Cutch back which was for ball four. Panik fouled out for the first out leaving runners on first and third for Posey.

Cutch stole second uncontested but Posey hit a ground ball to first. Flores fielded the ball and threw home which d’Arnaud was tagged out. Crawford hit a pop fly to shallow left field that Rosario and Smith had eyes on. The two bumped into each other as the ball fell to the ground allowing Cutch to break the tie 2-1 in favor of the Giants.

Hitting

Amed Rosario led the game off with a single to left. With one out and Rosario on first, Wilmer Flores hit an opposite field double. The ball went all the way to the right field wall allowing Rosario to score easily. Todd Frazier flied out and Jose Bautista struck out to end the inning. The Mets offense were only able to collect one hit the next four inning but got the first two batters on base to lead off the sixth inning.

Flores led off the frame with a single to center and Frazier followed up with a walk. Giants starter Derek Holland was pulled from the game in favor of Sam Dyson. Dyson got Bautista to hit into a 5-4-3 double play and Reyes to ground out to first to end the inning.

Devin Mesoraco flied out for the first out of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Jeff McNeil singled to right and later advanced to third when fellow pinch-hitter Michael Conforto singled. The game remained tied at 1-1 as Rosario grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. In the eighth inning Austin Jackson led off the frame with a single. After a fly out from Flores, Frazier struck out and Jackson was thrown out attempting to steal second ending the inning in another double play.   

Flores hit a single with one out in the eleventh inning. It was the first Mets hit since the eighth inning. Frazier was able to run the count full but struck out looking for the third time tonight. A wild pitch with Bautista batting allowed Flores to advance to second. Bautista would draw a walk later in the at-bat. Jose Reyes hit a line drive that was snagged out of the air by Crawford ending the inning.

Mesoraco fouled out behind the plate for the first out of the twelfth and Dominic Smith struck out on three pitches. Conforto and Rosario worked out back-to-back walks but Jackson popped up sending the game to the thirteenth inning.

The Mets went down in order in the thirteenth including a fly out by pinch-hitter Jason Vargas to end the game.

On Deck

The New York Mets will host the San Francisco Giants in the second game of the series on Tuesday night at Citi Field. The Mets will send Steven Matz (5-10, 4.60 ERA) as he will face off against Giants RHP Chris Stratton (8-7, 5.52 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET. Game will be televised on SNY and broadcast on WOR.
