Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that Tomas Nido has made the Opening Day roster and that Travis d’Arnaud will start the year on the 10-day Injured List (IL).

The Mets were unsure of whether they would go through with this decision or not, but given d’Arnaud only had 19 plate appearances and played in eight games it is not too surprising considering he is recovering from Tommy John Surgery.

At one point, this spot would have been expected to go to Devin Mesoraco, but the team decided that they would rather not have to DFA him when d’Arnaud was ready. That prompted him to refuse to play in Triple-A and request to be released, which the Mets refused to do. He was placed on the restricted list and is even considering retirement.

Brodie Van Wagenen confirmed at Jacob deGrom‘s press conference today that the team signed Rene Rivera back as well, who will report to Triple-A Syracuse.

Until d’Arnaud is ready to be activated, Nido will serve as the team’s backup catcher to Wilson Ramos.
