The Mets (72-58) defeated the Boston Red Sox (60-70) by a score of 5-4 this afternoon at Citi Field.

Pitching:

Noah Syndergaard got the start for the Mets this afternoon, and cruised through the first five innings, holding on to a 1-0 lead.

However, in the sixth inning, Syndergaard allowed a two-out hit to Xander Bogaerts, which was followed by a no doubt home run off the bat of David Ortiz to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead.

The Mets regained control in the bottom half of the frame, so Syndergaard went out for the top of the seventh.

Blake Swihart hit a single, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. The rookie catcher would then come around to score on a ground rule double from Jackie Bradley.

That would effectively end Thor’s day, as Mets’ skipper Terry Collins called Hansel Robles in to record the final out of the inning with the Mets holding on to a one run lead.

Mookie Betts was the batter to greet him, and he flew a shallow ball out to left field, which fell in front of Michael Cuddyer, leading to Betts sliding into third and the tying run coming across to score.

Tyler Clippard was then brought in to finish the inning, and he did just that, striking out Pablo Sandoval.

Clippard went back out for the eighth, and set down the side in order. With the Mets taking the lead in the bottom of the seventh, Clippard became the pitcher of record, and would earn his third win of the season.

Jeurys Familia came on in the ninth inning, looking to convert his 35th save of the year, and despite allowing the first two batters of the inning to reach base, he recorded two key outs, then struck out Mookie Betts to end the game.

Offense:

The Mets got on the board first in the second inning, as Michael Cuddyer and Juan Uribe hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame.

Ruben Tejada and Anthony Recker followed by hitting two lasers that were unfortunately caught. Noah Syndergaard was able to help his own cause, however, as he dunked a ball into left field to bring Cuddyer around from second.

In the sixth inning, after the Red Sox had taken the lead on David Ortiz’s home run, the Mets answered right back.

Daniel Murphy singled and Michael Cuddyer walked to set up an RBI situation for Juan Uribe. Uribe then drove in the pair by hitting a double to center field.

After Ruben Tejada grounded out to move Uribe up to third, Anthony Recker drilled a single to plate the Mets third run of the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, with the game knotted up, Daniel Murphy reached on a fielder’s choice, and then stole second base. Michael Cuddyer then laced a single to drive Murphy in and give the Mets the lead in the late goings.

It would be the last run the Mets scored, but it turned out to be all they need as the backed end up the bullpen shut things down and sealed the win and salvaged the final game of the series from the BoSox.
