After blowing Tom Glavine’s first attempt to win game 300, the Mets bats came alive and the bullpen was able to hang on to beat the Cubs 8-3 and secure the historic win for Glavine.
Once again Tom’s family was on hand to witness the big win in a game that was fraught with plenty of emotion for the crafty left-hander. Glavine even drove in the first run of the game in the third inning to pick up the game winning RBI on his momentous evening.
The Mets scored first when Lastings Milledge got on base with a single and then stole second base with two outs and Glavine up at the plate. It seemed like a questionable move, but it ended up being the smart thing to do as he came around to score on Glavine’s single.
The Mets scored again in the fifth inning with RBI doubles off the bats of Carlos Delgado and Shawn Green to make the score 3-0. In the sixth inning they added a couple of more runs and took a 5-0 lead highlighted by an RBI single from Jose Reyes.
Glavine kept cruising along and didn’t give up his first run until the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double by Aramis Ramirez.
Things got a little interesting in the seventh inning when Tom Glavine left after giving up a double to Angel Pagan. When Guillermo Mota took the mound, Jacque Jones slapped one to the right side, and drove Pagan home for the second run of the night. Exit Mota, enter Pedro Feliciano. Feliciano gives up a double to Mike Fontenot, as the Cubs scratch back to within two runs. Feliciano then gets the hook and gives way to Aaron Heilman who snuffs out the Cubs rally.
The Mets got those two runs back in the eight inning on RBI hits from Delgado and Paul LoDuca, and scored their final run in the ninth inning on a Carlos Delgado sac fly.
Billy Wagner came in to pitch the ninth inning in a non-save situation and sealed the deal for Tom Glavine and the Mets.
It was a game that was much like his last attempt, only this time the bullpen found themselves before completely losing it. The stakes were high and the emotions were just as high, but in the end it would all work out for the future hall of famer.
The fans at Wrigley showed plenty of class as they gave Tom Glavine a standing ovation when he left the game, and another one at the end of the game as the scoreboard flashed the number 300!
And that is the anatomy of win number 300 for Tom Glavine.
