Frustrating… It’s the first word that jumps into my head whenever I hear the name of Moises Alou. All the good he does when he’s in the lineup is just washed away in one fell swoop whenever the injury bug strikes. I wonder if he’s even worth it… I wonder if we would be better served with a lesser accomplished hitter who at least can play everyday…
Bart Hubbuch of the NY Post reports that this time Alou could miss at least a month… again…
Moises Alou is scheduled to return to New York this morning for an MRI exam after straining his left calf in last night’s 11-4 loss here to the Braves and walking off the field in the bottom of the third inning. The 41-year-old slugger, a disabled-list regular throughout his career, said he is steeling himself for another potentially long absence. Alou already has missed two months this season because of hernia surgery in early March.
"To tell the truth, and being realistic because I’ve had this before, I’m not very optimistic about it. One of the most embarrassing things is to walk off the field like I did, especially when you’re a guy with a track record of being injured," Alou said.
It wouldn’t be so bad if only we didn’t have a gazillion other aging broken down players on whom we bankrolled this season on. You know the cast of characters to whom I refer… Pedro, El Duque, Castillo, Easley, Castro, Valentin, should I go on?
They say you’re supposed to learn from your mistakes, and yet after going through this same onslaught of injuries last season, Omar Minaya went out and sealed our fate by re-signing Luis Castillo, Damian Easley, Ramon Castro and Moises Alou. Sure, I didn’t protest as loudly back then as I am now, but I’m not the GM… he is.
This roster was poorly conceived from the start. It’s too old and injury prone. The Ryan Church injury only illustrated how precarious this season really is for the Mets. They are a team that is one injury away from disaster. If Ryan Church had to miss a month or if God forbid, Wright or Reyes went down with an injury, would the Mets survive? The Phillies survived an injury to their best player Chase Utley last season, I wonder if the Mets have the mettle to do the same…
