The Milwaukee Brewers announced that star outfielder Christian Yelich will miss the remainder of the season with a fractured right knee cap. Yelich left Tuesday night’s game in the first inning after fouling a ball off his knee.

Yelich, 27, was battling with Cody Bellinger and Anthony Rendon for the National League MVP award entering the final weeks of the season. He finishes the year with a strong resume, but with more time than the defending NL MVP, Bellinger and Rendon have a chance to pull away with it.

On the season, Yelich hit .329/.429/.671 with 44 home runs, 29 doubles, 97 RBIs, 100 runs scored, and 30 stolen bases. At the time of his injury, his .430 OBP leads the National League while his .672 SLG%, 1.102 OPS, and 328 total bases lead the Major Leagues.

This is a big blow for the Brewers who are currently third in the Wild Card rankings behind the Nationals and Cubs. Even if they did make the playoffs, they would be playing in October without their best player.
