Yoenis Cespedes and the Mets were robbed of a walk-off victory Wednesday night, thanks to the glove of Atlanta Braves center fielder, Ender Inciarte.
Cespedes hit what looked like a game winning three-jun jack that would have saved the Mets from the embarrassment of being swept by the Atlanta Braves in a pennant race. It though was not meant to be.
“I knew I hit the ball well. I knew there was a good chance it was going to make it out. But he made a better play,’’ Cespedes said.
Yoenis had just missed another homer in the prior inning. Cespedes did not even begin to run on that previous shot, flipping his bat and barely jogging to first before realizing it stayed in the park, only making it to second on what should have been an easy triple.
He though made up for it by stealing third, only to be stranded. The entire team seemed to be in shock at the conclusion of this ball game as they all thought it had been won thanks to the powerful bat of Yo. Manager, Terry Collins could do nothing but tip his cap to Inciarte at the conclusion of the game.
“It’s a great catch, a tremendous catch. One of the best you’ll ever see,’’ Collins said. “Second night we’ve had the right guy up there at the right time and he just made a tremendous play to save the game.”
This is one of those games where the team cannot dwell on it. Today is a new day and they still have a clean slate as all three Wild Card teams lost their respective games Wednesday.
The Mets will get right back on the saddle tonight as they welcome in the Philadelphia Phillies. RHP Seth Lugo (4-2, 2.35 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets and he will be opposed by southpaw, Adam Morgan (2-10, 5.57 ERA).
It is time for this team to take care of business. Only 10 games remain in the 2016 MLB season.
