Mickey Callaway announced this morning that Yoenis Cespedes has been placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to Monday and the Mets have recalled Phillip Evans from Triple-A.
Sandy Alderson commented on Cespedes injury yesterday and said that despite previous reports to the contrary, the left-fielder had been dealing with a hip strain and not a quad injury.
Callaway said the decision was made last night, which would make sense considering Evans was scratched from the Las Vegas 51s lineup.
He also said that it is unknown at the moment how far beyond ten days the outfielder might miss.
Cespedes last played on Sunday in which he actually went 2-4 with a solo home run. For the season, the 32-year old is hitting .255/.316/.474 with eight home runs and 28 RBI. Strikeouts have been an issue for him this season, though, as he has 50 in 137 at-bats.
With Cespedes out, Brandon Nimmo and Juan Lagares are likely to receive more playing time.
Meanwhile, Evans joins the team for his second stint with the club this year. The infielder opened the year with the team and had three at-bats before being sent down in which he went 0-3 with a strikeout.
Evans is capable of playing every position on the diamond, outside of pitcher, and even worked on catching in Spring Training. The 25-year old was hitting .254/.315/.534 with nine homers and 23 RBI in 118 at-bats at Triple-A.
