19-year-old shortstop Gavin Cecchini‘s 16 game hit streak came to an end on Monday night after he went 0-3 in game one of a doubleheader against the Staten Island Yankees. Cecchini was one game shy of tying the Cyclone team record set by Lucas Duda in 2007.
The Mets top pick in the 2012 First Year Player Draft, Cecchini is hitting .302 this season with ten RBI’s and two stolen bases in 151 plate appearances. Out of all Cyclone players Cecchini’s average ranks second closely behind second baseman L.J. Mazzilli, son of former Mets outfielder Lee Mazzilli, who has hit .303 in his 241 plate appearances this season. The two make up a majority of the critical middle part of the Cyclones lineup.
Cecchini’s streak is so impressive because of his age. At only 19 years old, he is the second youngest player on the Cyclones’ roster, with catcher Thomas Nido being a few months younger. Lucas Duda was 21 years old when he had his 17 game streak. While this streak may not predict major league greatness, it’s certainly a promising sign of potential from a young teenage prospect.
After being no-hit through the first 6.2 innings, the Cyclones rallied for four straight singles, capped by a two-RBI grounder up the middle from Matthew Oberste as the Cyclones defeated the Staten Island Yankees 2-0 on Tuesday night. With the win, the Cyclones moved just 0.5 a game out of first place in the McNamara Division standings.
