The Mets and Cubs wrapped up their three-game series at Wrigley Field on Thursday night with the Mets taking a convincing 10-1 win behind a terrific outing from Carlos Carrasco. The Mets put up their second-highest run total of the season behind big games from Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso, and five Mets finished with multi-hit games.

The Mets scored first in the top of the first inning. Brandon Nimmo singled to lead off the game, and after walks to McNeil and Alonso, Brett Baty hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the game’s first run.

In the bottom of the first, the Cubs got the run right back. After getting ahead of Dansby Swanson in the count 0-2, Carrasco missed with his next three pitches before hanging a 3-2 slider that Swanson sent into the seats in left field.

Hendricks and Carrasco both threw perfect innings in the second before the Mets got the lead back with a two-out, three-run rally in the top of the third. Hendricks retired the first two batters before McNeil and Alonso hit back-to-back singles to bring up Baty in another RBI opportunity. Baty pulled an RBI single to right field and took second on an errant throw by Seiya Suzuki. With two runners in scoring position, Starling Marte hit a two-run single on an 0-2 pitch to put the Mets ahead 4-1.

The Cubs threatened in the bottom of the inning, but Carrasco was able to escape a bases loaded jam. Two singles and a walk brought Mike Tauchman to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, but the Mets’ veteran right-hander retired him on a ground out to get out of the inning without any runs scoring.

In the top of the fifth, the Mets tacked on another run on heads up base-running from McNeil and Alonso. McNeil hit his second single of the game and advanced to second when Alonso was hit by a pitch. The duo pulled off a double steal, and McNeil came home with the Mets’ fifth run when the throw from Yan Gomes went into left field.

The Mets’ two homegrown All-Stars came to the plate again in the seventh, and once again put runs on the board. McNeil singled for his third hit of the night, and Alonso followed with a two-run home run to put the Mets ahead 7-1. The homer was Alonso’s league-leading 19th of the season and his sixth in the past nine games.

After escaping trouble in the third inning, Carrasco settled in. He allowed a one-out walk in the fourth then retired the next 10 batters he faced. He did not allow another baserunner until Gomes singled with two outs in the seventh inning to put an end to Carrasco’s best start of the season. Adam Ottavino came into the game and recorded the final out of the inning to close the book on Carrasco’s outing.

The Mets’ offensive onslaught continued in the eighth inning with three more runs. A single from Daniel Vogelbach single and a double from Francisco Álvarez brought Nimmo to the plate with a chance to drive in two runs. He delivered with his second triple of the season to extend the Mets lead to 9-1. Francisco Lindor followed with a single to drive Nimmo in and make it a 10-1 game.

Tommy Hunter entered the game to pitch the final two innings with the big lead and pitched two scoreless innings to close out the Mets’ win. The Mets finished with 15 hits, their most in a game since April 27, in the win.

Player Of The Game: Carlos Carrasco

Carrasco gave the Mets a much-needed bounce-back outing on Thursday night. He entered the night with an 8.68 ERA after giving up five runs in five innings in his last start against the Guardians. He had to work his way through some traffic in the early innings, but settled in to retire 10 of the final 11 batters he faced to end the Mets’ two-game losing streak. The outing by Carrasco was not only important because the team had dropped their last two games, but it was also an encouraging sign that Carrasco could help a Mets’ rotation that has desperately needed it through the season’s first two months.

On Deck

The Mets will travel to Colorado for a three-game series with the Rockies starting Friday night. Max Scherzer (3-2, 4.01 ERA) will start for the Mets against Connor Seabold (1-1, 5.97 ERA) for the Rockies.

Scherzer is coming off a dominant outing against the Guardians, throwing six scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. It will be his seventh career start at Coors Field and just his second outing in Colorado since 2016.

The game will be broadcast on WPIX and the radio broadcast will be on WCBS 880.
