The Mets played their second game of a three-game series on Tuesday night against the Miami Marlins and while they managed to secure a 6-5 victory, they struggled to get there as Jason Vargas started the game and the bullpen was left to pitch the remaining four innings with a 5-2 lead.
Robert Gsellman came into the game for the sixth inning and after recording the first two outs, found himself in a bit of trouble after allowing back-to-back singles to Neil Walker and Miguel Rojas. However, the 25-year-old managed to strike out Curtis Granderson to put that threat to rest.
Putting Seth Lugo in the game, though, proved to be a significant mistake on Mickey Callaway‘s part as the right-hander was charged with three runs over 1 1/3 innings that saw him throw 37 pitches.
That decision looks questionable not only because of the result, but because he also has apparently been sick the last few days, including his outing on Saturday where he allowed four runs (none earned), two walks, one HBP, and one hit against the Washington Nationals. He also threw 41 pitches in that outing, making him unavailable until Tuesday night.
So, with that being the case, the question should really be asked why Callaway would let him toss another 37 pitches again? At this rate, that could potentially make him unavailable until Friday night. Considering how valuable a reliever Lugo was in 2018, it would make more sense to have him available more than twice a week.
Anyways, the Mets brought in Justin Wilson to stop the bleeding who induced a fielder’s choice from JT Riddle which allowed the Marlins fifth run of the game to score, but recorded the second out of the inning. Wilson then proceeded to strike out Jorge Alfaro to retire the side and strand Starlin Castro and Brian Anderson on second and third base respectively.
The mistake Callaway might have made here was leaving Justin Wilson in to start the ninth inning as he hit Lewis Brinson to start things off. Peter O’Brien then hit a bullet to Amed Rosario that he managed to jump and secure for the first out, albeit a loud one at that.
Chad Wallach then proceeded to single to left field, putting the tying run in scoring position and the winning run on base with one out.
Wilson got bailed out big time, though, as another liner was hit to Rosario who threw to second after Brinson tripped trying to get back to the bag to end the game.
Now, this move did appear less questionable after it was learned after the game that both Jeurys Familia and Edwin Diaz were unavailable, but at the same, Wilson and Lugo are almost certainly unavailable for tonight’s game and Gsellman might be as well after tossing 21 pitches on Tuesday and 26 on Sunday.
That potentially could limit the Mets to four bullpen options Wednesday in Tim Peterson, Luis Avilan, Jeurys Familia, and Edwin Diaz. Despite the fact that Jacob deGrom is on the mound for the series finale, it still is dangerous to leave the team that depleted.
