Just minutes after they acquired Christain Yelich from the Marlins, the Brewers have signed free agent outfielder Lorenzo Cain per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com further reports that the deal is for five years and $80 million and includes no-trade protection and award bonuses. The deal is official as he has passed his physical.
It is the biggest contract of the offseason so far.
Cain, 31, hit .300/.363/.440 in 155 games for the Royals this season, tallying 15 home runs and 26 stolen bases while playing superb center field. He finished third in MVP voting in 2015 when the Royals went to the World Series.
After acquiring Cain, the Brewers now have a glut of talent in the outfield that also includes Yelich, Ryan Braun, Domingo Santana and Keon Broxton. While an hour ago they wouldn’t have been in the conversation, they now easily have one of the best outfields in the game.
