Bobby Parnell has officially been placed on the disabled list with a herniated disk in his neck.
Sandy Alderson suggested surgery ultimately may be required, according to Adam Rubin.
“He had a series of injections last week. He had an epidural yesterday. And so right now we’re simply evaluating how he responds to those two treatments,” Alderson said.
“We’ll know more in the next two or three days. It is conceivable that if those don’t work, something more significant, more invasive would have to be considered — surgery, possibly. But right now we’re not at that stage.”

If I’m Sandy I am all over calling up Jeff Walters from Double-A Binghamton where he is having an incredible and record-breaking season. No way do I trust ANY of the current relievers to close games out for the Mets…. No way.
Walters has already broken the saves record for Binghamton with 32 to lead the Eastern League. He has a 1.89 ERA in 47.2 innings pitched allowing just allowing just 37 hits and 12 walks while striking out 50 batters.
The 25-year old righthander has allowed just three home runs in 80 appearances over the last two years. Consider that along with his 9.9 K/9 and 4.17 K/BB and these are the numbers you want from a closer.
Nobody in the current Mets pen even comes close… Nobody…

Bobby Parnell will be reexamined by a doctor today after missing his fifth straight game with a sore neck. The closer could face a stint on the disabled list, according to comments made by Terry Collins.
“Parnell has not improved a lot. I mean, he feels better, but not enough to pitch him for sure.”
Parnell has not pitched since Tuesday and has been taking muscle relaxants to reduce spasms.
The Mets close is having the best season of his career with 22 saves and a 2.16 ERA.
David Aardsma, who has replaced Parnell as closer, blew a save and the took a loss in two games during the Royals series, and now has a 5.06 ERA in his last ten appearances.
