On Thursday, just one day after the end of the season, Bo Bichette made a decision on his future. Per Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets third baseman is exercising his $42 million player option and will return to the Mets for the 2027 season. Bichette has another player option in his contract after the 2027 season, giving him the chance to have a strong season and get the contract he desires after the season.
On the Mets side of things, they retain a key piece of their team and a vital presence in the middle of the lineup next to Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Carson Benge. The team also hasn’t had consistent stability at third base since David Wright, and Bichette’s return gives them that. Defensively, Bichette adjusted to play a solid third base.
Last season, after a slow start and struggling to drive in runs in scoring position, Bichette bounced back with a strong second half. He also played to his standard with runners in scoring position as the year went on. In his first year in Queens, Bichette batted .260 with an OBP of .312 and slugged .390, with a 97 OPS+. He notched 166 hits, 18 home runs, 78 RBIs, and 76 runs scored.
The Mets hope that Bichette will follow up his good second half with a full 2027 season of what Bo Bichette has shown in the past for the Toronto Blue Jays, including in the 2025 postseason. When considering past Mets such as Carlos Beltrán and Francisco Lindor, each following up tough first years with All-Star-worthy second seasons, the expectation for Bichette to do the same will be high.
