Last night, Jason Bay was forced to leave the game against the Cincinnati Reds after hitting his head against the left-field wall on Jay Bruce’s second-inning inside-the-park home run.

The Mets are saying that Bay likely suffered another concussion and expect to place him on the disabled list before today’s game. Infielder Justin Turner is expected to be activated before the game and is already back in Flushing after a two game rehab stint in Buffalo.

As most of you may recall, Bay missed the final two months of 2010 after suffering a concussion, and has already missed more than two-thirds of the games played this season because of a fractured rib. He was only activated from the DL for that rib cage injury a week ago.

“I felt terrible for Jason,” Terry Collins said. “He always plays the game one way — all out. He never backed off anything. He didn’t back off the wall. He didn’t back off a broken rib. He still dove. He still plays the game the only way he knows how.”

As Bay was escorted off the field by trainer Ray Ramirez, he was visibly shaken and wobbled back into the Mets dugout under a shower of boos from the fans at Citi Field.

It prompted reliever Jon Rauch to make this statement via Twitter after the game:

Very disappointed with the fans who booed Jason Bay as he came off the field. This is a serious injury that affects his livelihood and his well being. He plays his heart out every time he takes the field. It’s very unfortunate that he’s had to deal with multiple concussions and other injuries – we all have him and his family in our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

What is it with some of these so-called Mets fans?

Are they operating with no hearts and only half a brain?

Would they boo a family member if they fell down the stairs and cracked their skulls open while bringing the Thanksgiving Turkey to the dinner table?

This kind of warped and depraved behavior is beginning to be a common occurence now and not just an occasional isolated incident.

No matter what you may think of a players performance, how can you boo him while he is lying on the ground in pain?

Have you ever gotten hurt on the job? I know I have. Did your co-workers and customers stand up to jeer and boo you or did they instead come to your assistance and offer to help?

Anyway, I wish Jason Bay a speedy recovery. If he doesn’t start producing upon his return, whenever that may be, I’ll go back to complaining about him. But for chrissakes to boo him whiles he’s down on the ground, or cheer because he’s hurt and out of the lineup is about as bad as it gets.

In Bay’s place, I’m sure the red-hot Scott Hairston will receive more playing time, but expect Kirk Nieuwenhuis to get the lion’s share of playing time, which is exactly as it should be.
