It’s official: Brett Baty is a second baseman.

The former top Mets’ prospect is making his pro debut at second base tonight for the Syracuse Mets, confirming reports last week that he would get reps at the position.

Baty was optioned to Triple-A on May 31, and again on June 10 after a short stint with the Mets in London, to work on his offense. Now, he’ll start working at a new position to become more versatile for the Mets in the future. Before his demotion, Baty was in the 75th percentile for outs above average (1) at third base.

If successful at second, Baty could hit his way back to the Mets. He’s slashed .421/.421/.895 with three homers in 19 at-bats with Syracuse, which includes a two-homer game.

Baty is slated to bat third tonight at his new position. You can watch Baty at his new position at 6:35 P.M. on milb.tv, as the Syracuse Mets take on the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies) at Coca-Cola Park.
