The Eastern League defending champions started their spring training schedule on Thursday with a 9-3 loss to the Jacksonville Sun.

Octavio Acosta started for the B-Mets and allowed 6 runs in 3 innings. Acosta is a 24-year old right-hander who pitched to a 2.93 ERA and 1.127 WHIP for Brooklyn and Savannah last year. Fellow right-hander Domingo Tapia pitched a scoreless inning in relief for Binghamton. Tapia struggled in St. Lucie last year posting a 1.422 WHIP and an awful 1.10 SO/W ratio.

Victor Cruzado was the lone bright spot offensively going 2-4 with a 2B and a RBI single. Cruzado is a 22-year old switch hitter who had a .273/.371/.404 line at Savannah last year.

Binghamton lost their second game of the spring yesterday to the Springfield Cardinals 7-0.

MMO #13 prospect Gabriel Ynoa started the game and struggled as he gave up 5 runs over 3 innings of work. Left-hander Chase Huchingson threw two scoreless innings in relief. Chase pitched in 25 games for Binghamton last year and had a 3.10 ERA to go with his 4-1 record. Paul Sewald also pitched two innings and he allowed 1 run to score. The 24-year old right-hander has a career 1.86 ERA over 140 Minor League innings for the Mets.

The B-Mets were only able to muster three hits and Jared King had two of them. The switch-hitting outfielder had 4 HR’s and 51 RBI’s last year over three different levels finishing in St. Lucie.

Binghamton’s next game will be in Jupiter on Sunday against the Jacksonville Sun.
