According to a team source, Asdrubal Cabrera has arrived in camp with the Leones del Caracas of the Venezuelan Winter League.
Cabrera, 31, could be added to the roster as early as this week to get some at-bats. He played in five games for Leones last season and went 3 for 19. The Venezuelan Winter League regular season ends on December 29.
The New York Mets signed Cabrera to a two-year deal with an option last offseason and were rewarded with a great 2016 in which he hit .280/.336/.474 with 30 doubles, 23 home runs and 62 RBI.
Yesterday, we reported that Jeurys Familia has received permission from the Mets to play in the Dominican Winter League.
