New York Mets doctors evaluated outfielder Juan Lagares today, two days after he hurt his arm making a diving catch in the Dominican Winter League. The Mets staff has diagnosed Lagares with a mild shoulder strain in his right arm.

Lagares was hitting .170/.184/.255 in 14 games this winter for the Aguilas Cibaenas.

Previous Report – Dec. 11

According to a source in the Dominican, Juan Lagares had x-rays on his right shoulder today after being removed from Saturday night’s game and they came back negative.

Lagares is now expected to head back to New York for a second opinion.

The removal from the game for Lagares was, at this time, said to be precautionary as he came down hard on his throwing shoulder and got his spikes caught in the landing when making a spectacular diving catch.

He is currently expected to be day-to-day. Will update when more information becomes available.

Original Report – Dec 10

Juan Lagares made a diving catch with the bases loaded in the fifth inning of a Dominican Winter League matchup between the Aguilas Cibaenas and the Tigres del Licey tonight. Lagares was seen wincing in pain as he ran off the field, and was removed in the top of the seventh inning with a possible injury.

Lagares was 0 for 2 on the night before leaving the game with what is still an unknown injury. He has played in 14 winter ball games for the Aguilas and has struggled at the plate with a .170 average and .439 OPS.

The 27-year old New York Mets outfielder missed significant time during the 2016 regular season after having surgery on his left thumb in July.

Lagares surprisingly returned to the Mets on September 18, but was used mainly as a defensive replacement and received only five plate appearances the rest of the season.
