While looking through name upon name of the free-agents this winter, the familiar ring of “Endy Chavez” jumped off the page at me. After mulling it over, I would not be opposed to seeing Chavez back patrolling the outfield of Citi Field.
The 33-year old outfielder is forever etched in the memory of every Met fan for his unfathomable, spectacular, home run-robbing grab he made in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS, so fans would likely welcome him back with open arms. He came back healthy in 2011 with the Texas Rangers after missing almost two years with a knee injury, and actually had a respectable year. Chavez hit .301 with 5 home runs and 27 RBIs in just 250 at-bats. 
Chavez could be a solid 4th outfielder behind Angel Pagan should he be tendered, acting as a safety net should Pagan struggle further in 2012. The guy puts the ball in play, great range, blazing speed and could be a replacement in the leadoff spot should Reyes skip town, which is becoming increasingly likely. He would be a cheaper option than Coco Crisp or Grady Sizemore and maybe with less of a risk, and in Crisp’s case, Chavez has a higher reward.
Anyone else interested in a triumphant return for Endy Chavez? In my opinion, I think it would be a solid, low-risk acquisition.
