The Mets (58-44) continued their winning streak on Tuesday evening, taking down the Angels (49-52) by a score of 3-2 at Citi Field. With this victory, the club has now won three games in a row and will look to complete a series sweep tomorrow.

Despite being outhit by Los Angeles 11 to 5, it ultimately didn’t matter, as all three of New York’s runs came in a pivotal fifth-inning rally. The bullpen was stellar, piggybacking off Frankie Montas‘ start, shutting down the Angels’ bats and not allowing a single run.

(Box Score)

Frankie Montas earned the win for New York, tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on eight hits, with two walks and six strikeouts. He did face some early challenges, as Angels got on the board in the second with a solo home run from Jorge Soler and extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth with an RBI double. Montas’ defense helped keep the scoring at bay, as Juan Soto threw a runner out at home in the first and Pete Alonso made a leaping grab that was headed for the right field corner in the middle of a rally.

However, the Mets quickly responded in the home half of the inning. A two-out rally began with a Brett Baty double, followed by Francisco Alvarez’s two-run homer, his fourth of the year (and first at Citi Field this year), to tie the game. (He’s back.) The momentum continued as Ronny Mauricio singled, stole second for his third steal of the season, and Brandon Nimmo delivered an RBI base hit to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

The Mets’ bullpen took over from there. Rico Garcia relieved Montas in the sixth and pitched effectively into the seventh. Reed Garrett then entered, securing the final out of the seventh and tossing a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Ryne Stanek closed out the game in the ninth, earning his second save in three days by inducing a pop-up from Mike Trout with two runners on and two outs, sealing the Mets’ win.
