After being informed he would not receive a big league promotion in 2018, Mets’ first base prospect Peter Alonso responded with a monster night for Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday.

The 23-year-old went 4-for-4 at the dish, while hitting two homers and driving in four runs. On the season, he is now up to 35 homers and 117 RBI in 464 at-bats.

In his last 10 games, Alonso is hitting .368, and on the season, has registered a .284/.396/.576 slash line to go along with 75 walks.

Part of the reason Alonso wasn’t called up, the team brass said, was due in part to his defensive skill set and the fact that he wouldn’t be able to see enough playing time.

Meanwhile, Jay Bruce has started three of the last seven games at first base, while Alonso and fellow first baseman Dominic Smith are still in the minors.

Bruce, who has two years left on his contract after this season, has been floated around by the Mets as a potential starting first baseman in 2019, as they want Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo to man the corner outfield positions.

Earlier this week, Alonso’s agents released a statement, showing their disappointment in their client not receiving a promotion.

“It is disheartening for Peter after producing an historically great season and exceeding every request from the Mets player development staff,” his agents told the New York Times. “I’m sure it is equally disheartening for Mets fans who would enjoy watching and getting to know one of the more talented and entertaining players they’ve developed in years.”

Alonso later said that he doesn’t have beef with the Mets, despite being dejected he wasn’t called up.

“Before the statement came out I had a private conversation with Omar and they knew how I felt,” Alonso said Thursday. “They knew I was disappointed, but the one thing I want to clear up is I kind of feel people are trying to create something between me and the Mets. I bleed blue and orange.”

One can only hope that Alonso forces his way to Queens early next season, because if we want to talk about poor defense, Bruce has already shown he isn’t a valuable defensive commodity at the position.
