Sandy Alderson 2Sandy Alderson was a guest of Mike Francesa on WFAN today and said a few things that are worth discussing…

Aside from the usual dialog about how everything is going according to plan and things are going as well as expected, there were a few things worth noting and I’ll post on each one.

First thing’s first, Matt Harvey

While he said the injury to his ace has had an impact, “It’s not as significant as some people have said, at least in terms of our planning.”

Alderson said if he isn’t going to be ready for next season he will be looking for a top of rotation starter in the offseason and not leave Jon Niese, Dillon Gee and Zack Wheeler to fill his shoes.

“We’ve got some money to spend, I wasn’t planning on spending it on starting pitching because of the depth that we have, but given the fact that we may have lost our number one guy means we’re gonna have to look for an additional veteran presence in the rotation. We have to accept it, absorb it and try to move on to be better.”

I didn’t expect to hear that…

I figured they would just stand pat and see what they’d get out of Jenrry Mejia, Jacob deGrom and Rafael Montero. I figured Niese would simply slide into the top spot and then a mix of the options I mentioned would slot in right behind Gee and Wheeler.

I’m not so sure that if we’re gonna spend money that we go hog wild on a starting pitcher…

What do you think?

Harvey will likely seek a second opinion on Tommy John Surgery when he meets with Dr. James Andrews. A decision will be made by the end of September and it will be Harvey’s decision.
