addison reed

Per ESPN’s Adam Rubin on Twitter, the Mets will use Addison Reed as closer if Jeurys Familia misses any time due to his legal issues.

The Mets have a need for a late-inning addition, but this pretty much eliminates the possibility of a high-profile closer signing like Aroldis Chapman, Mark Melancon, or Kenley Jansen.

Reed, 27, has been nothing short of phenomenal in a Mets uniform. He appeared in 80 games in 2016, posting a pristine 1.97 ERA and 0.940 WHIP. The Mets traded for him late in the 2015 season and he was a big reason they made it to the World series, as he appeared in 17 games down the stretch and allowing only two earned runs (1.17 ERA).

He served as closer for the White Sox and Diamondbacks between 2012-2014, saving 101 games in that span.

He has certainly found a home in a Mets uniform, and I have no doubt he would perform well as closer if the Mets call upon him.
