The deadline for those interested in purchasing the Mets to submit their final bids is fast approaching, with August 31 set as a hard due date for all candidates.
Now, with a little over two weeks to go, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that several MLB executives are of the mindset that Alex Rodriguez and his ownership group have emerged as the “clear-cut favorite” to purchase the team.
In addition to Rodriguez himself (and, of course, his fiancée Jennifer Lopez), his group includes Florida Panthers owner Vinnie Viola and Vitaminwater co-founder Mike Repole.
Other candidates include Steve Cohen – who others believe to be the true frontrunner for the winning bid – as well as a third team led by Josh Harris and David Blitzer, who already claim the Philadelphia 76ers, the New Jersey Devils and their arena, the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, as well as the English Premier League team Crystal Palace.
