Mike Pelfrey pitched a heck of a game yesterday as he helped to extend the Mets winning streak to four games after a 7-5 clubbing of the Phillies.
Pelfrey pitched seven solid innings, but failed to notch one strikeout. It was his second straight game without a whiff.
So far this season, Pelfrey has struck out just six batters in 28 innings.
He has now gone 76 batters without a strikeout which caused David Wright to playfully take a jab at Pelfrey after last nights game.
While passing by Pelfrey who was being interviewed in the locker room, Wright blurts out, “His streak of no strikeouts is still intact.”
Of course strikeouts don’t win games, as evidenced by Oliver Perez who had 20 of them with not much else to show for it. But it does help to register a few outs without putting the ball in play.
Pelfrey was not too concerned about it, “I don’t care, really, I just like to have more strikeouts than walks.”
Pelfrey has the lowest strikeout rate in the majors for pitchers with 28 or more innings pitched.
