In March he wasn’t even wanted on the team by most Mets fans.
He was hitting about .150 in Spring Training and everyone was hoping for Lastings Milledge to supplant him in right field.
Of course, I’m talking about Shawn Green.
Tomorrow Green will rejoin the team, and Mets fans will welcome him back with open arms.
Shawn Green has gone from least wanted to keeper, and all it took was two months and a .314 batting average that was good enough to lead the team.
His 5 home runs and 22 RBI provided the Mets with a potent bat in the bottom of the order.
When Shawn Green went on the DL, the Mets led the National League in Runs Scored, RBI’s, Batting Average and On-Base Percentage. He now returns to find the Mets falling to 4th and 5th place in those same categories.
Believe it or not, Shawn Green is a difference maker and his value to the team became quite apparent during his absence.
The Mets had survived injuries to both Jose Valentin and Moises Alou, but when Green went down, the Mets bats spiraled into oblivion.
It will be good to see the Lean, Green, Hitting Machine patrolling right field once again for the New York Mets!
