According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets are hiring former long-time major league catcher A.J. Ellis. Sammon reports the role will be for the Mets major league staff as a strategy coordinator.

Ellis had recently worked with the San Diego Padres a special assistant to the general manager. Before that, Ellis played in 11 big leagues seasons. His final season came with the Padres in 2018 when Mets manager Andy Green held that same position in San Diego.

Ellis was hired in 2019 to work in the front office while Green was still the manager in San Diego.

Ellis and Green have held a friendship for years going back to their hometown of Lexington, Kentucky. They both played in a flag football league their alongside former Met Collin Cowgill.
