Steamer has released their initial projections for the 2027 season and by depth chart alignment, the Mets rank sixth overall with 41 WAR. Their offense ranks fourth overall with 25.3 WAR and their pitching ranks seventeenth with 15.7 WAR.
It is important to remember that these are not meant to project exactly what will happen in 2027. These are 50th percentile projections, listing the middle of the range of projections. A team that is ranked well at the midpoint can tank lower in their 10th percentile projections if they have a lower floor. Similarly they could rank lower in their 90th percentile projections if their ceiling is worse than teams behind them at their 50th. And vice versa if their floor or ceiling is higher. It does make sense that the Mets, a team that does not have many free agents on the market, would rank well in this initial ranking.
Where do the Mets Rank Across Positions
Juan Soto is their most valuable player and leads all of left field with 5.3 WAR. Francisco Lindor comes in just behind him with 4.4 WAR tying him with Mookie Betts as the seventh most valuable projected shortstop. Bo Bichette ranks sixth at third base tied with Maikel Garcia.
Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens combine for 3.5 WAR which puts them as a top ten catching duo.
The Mets young outfielders are both middle of the pack at their positions with Carson Benge ranking tenth among right fielders and A.J. Ewing tying Max Clark for eleventh place.
The Mets weakest projected positions are first base, second base, and designated hitter. Jared Young is listed as a platoon hitter without a clear partner at first base. He is projected as a 111 wRC+ hitter worth 1.1 WAR in 102 games.
Brett Baty (101 wRC+ and 1.2 WAR) and Marcus Semien (91 wRC+ and 1.1 WAR) combine for second base while Jorge Polanco (101 wRC+ and 0.3 WAR) and Mark Vientos (108 wRC+ and 0.6 WAR) combine at DH.
Where Do The Mets Rank Among Stats
The Mets are projected to have the fourth best team OPS at .761. A big part of this projection is the expectation that Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Bo Bichette will have healthy and normal seasons for them. They are also projected the fourth most RBIs and Runs.
By home runs the Mets are projected to have the ninth most home runs. In 2026 they were ninth as well. By stolen bases they are projected slightly above average at 14th. This is an improvement from 24th in 2026.
The Mets project for the tenth best ERA and WHIP, likely helped by pitching in Citi Field. They project third best in saves and eleventh in holds and wins.
Who is Projected to Lead the Team Stats?
As expected Juan Soto leads most of the Mets projected leaderboards with 36 HR, 94 RBI, 110 Runs, and a .953 OPS.
Bo Bichette projects to lead in batting average at .271 and hits at 170. A.J. Ewing projects to lead the team in stolen bases at 31.
Nolan McLean leads with 12 wins, and among the Mets starters he has the best ERA at 3.62. Christian Scott has the best WHIP at 1.22.
Among relievers Nate Lavender leads in ERA at 3.22 and WHIP at 1.21. He leads in holds as well at 17. Devin Williams leads in saves at 32.
Conclusion
These projections will change significantly as free agents sign and trades are made. But the Mets do have a good foundation to build off of with some key areas of need including second base and starting pitching. It will be interesting to see how each projection system differs as they release.
